Cengage Joins Massachusetts Business Coalition in Support of Transgender Rights

BOSTON—October 4, 2018 — Cengage, an education and technology company, today announced its support of Freedom for All Massachusetts, an advocacy group dedicated to preserving legislation that prohibits discrimination on the basis of gender identity in public spaces.

“We are proud to support the rights of all people in Massachusetts, from our hundreds of employees in our Boston headquarters to the hundreds of thousands of students we serve throughout the state,” said Todd Markson, Chief Strategy Officer, Cengage. “Discrimination in any form goes against our company values and is discordant with our mission to bring affordable, high-quality education to learners everywhere.”

Cengage support of this initiative is aligned with our commitment to cultivating a diverse and inclusive workforce. The company fosters this commitment in a variety of ways, most notably our Employee Resource Groups, which are voluntary, employee-led groups organized around shared experiences or affinity, that help to build a positive and supportive workplace.

“I am proud to work for a company that stands up for transgender equality,” said Mark Cohen, Director, Market Development, and Co-Founder of the Cengage Pride Employee Resource Group. “Cultivating an inclusive, safe work environment that is free from discrimination in any shape or form is fundamental to the development of our employees and the success of the company.”

Freedom for All Massachusetts is a broad-based bipartisan coalition with the goal of protecting transgender people from discrimination in public places, such as restaurants, hotels and hospitals. On November 6, Massachusetts voters will have the opportunity to vote “Yes on 3,” which aims to preserve 2016 legislation preventing discrimination based on gender identity in public places. Beyond support for this ballot initiative, Cengage is actively working with its LGBTQ and other Employee Resource Groups to identify proactive ways to eliminate any form of workplace discrimination.
