We spoke with Abbey K., Lead Enrollment Representative, about why she is passionate about helping learners achieve their dreams with skills training.
How does your role and the work you do help students and learners?
In my role, I connect with potential students and actively listen to their career aspirations. I help make their dreams a reality by enrolling them in advanced career training courses that align with their goals. It is a beautiful thing to work with students, show them you care about their future and witness their success stories upon course completion. It is an incredibly rewarding experience.
Within my role, I also coach and guide other enrollment representatives within ed2go. I work closely with them to ensure they understand how to perform their roles effectively and efficiently, meet with them to understand their personal improvement goals and help them achieve success. It is very rewarding for me when I can help colleagues see their full potential.
What is something you're proud of that has impacted learners?
I am very proud of my dedication to learning how to use Salesforce Lightning. When we transitioned to this new system, I knew early on that understanding it would be crucial for my success. I invested a lot of time and effort into comprehending the workflow, as well as the cadences and the outreach strategy within the system. This has allowed me to be more efficient within my role and enabled me to offer advice and clarification while the team is still adapting to change.
My experience in the medical field is also something I am very proud of. My knowledge and past experiences allow me to confidently assist students who are looking to start a career in healthcare, understanding the process and what is needed for ultimate success.
What are the biggest challenges/opportunities facing today's learners and the education industry?
One of the biggest challenges I experience with my students is instilling in them the belief that they can succeed. They need someone in their corner telling them that their dreams are possible and attainable. I know a lot of students struggle with the financial aspect of school, however, once I explain to them that our courses are more cost-effective than some of the other programs and discuss payment options, the price is not as much of a challenge or as intimidating for them.
What motivated you to work at Cengage Group and in edtech?
I always say that I didn't choose Cengage; Cengage chose me. Working in education technology was never something that crossed my mind. The opportunity arose when I needed a remote position due to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and having young children. I wanted a job that would allow me to work, while also ensuring a safe environment for my kids during school or daycare closures. After being in the role for a very short period, I knew that this was the job for me. While the remote aspect initially attracted me to the position, I now see it as a long-term career.
As a remote employee, can you share a bit more about your experience?
Working remotely has been an amazing experience and opportunity. When it comes to work-life balance it has created more opportunities for my professional growth and personal life. As a mom of two school-aged children and a newborn, working remotely has allowed me to spend more quality time with my kids while also having a career as a businesswoman. Striking a balance between the two is very important to me, and the remote aspect of my job allows me to achieve that. I have weekly virtual meetings that help me stay connected; we talk about business updates, voice questions and concerns and share what is going on personally, fostering a deeper camaraderie among team members.
What else would you like to share about your career journey and experience at Cengage Group?
My career journey has been absolutely amazing so far, and I cannot wait to see what the future holds. I am proud to be a part of the culture, and I am honored to call Cengage Group my home.
