Cengage Group is Named a Best Place to Work in 2023

It’s an exciting time to work at Cengage Group! Earlier this week, we were named a Best Place to Work in 2023. This acknowledgement from Glassdoor is a further confirmation of what I already know. It reinforces what I experience at Cengage Group every day. As a talent leader, this recognition and the Glassdoor reviews from current and former employees show me that we're focused on the right things. We’re working hard to ensure Cengage Group is a place where people feel they can thrive in their careers.
What Makes Cengage Group Special?
There are 2.3 million companies represented on Glassdoor, but I think what sets Cengage Group apart is our culture of candor and transparency. Our people work together in a way that is so fundamentally tied to our Credo and our Ethos. These guide the way we treat each other every day and inspire us to walk the walk.
We are a mission-driven company where employees can be proud of what we do to enable student choice and help people better their lives through educational opportunities. In addition to the pride we have in our work, this recognition shows that employees genuinely feel Cengage Group is a place they can be themselves, grow and learn. I appreciate working for a company that cares about me as a person and I’m proud of our commitment to wellness.
We Encourage Candid Feedback
It’s essential to receive transparent, routine feedback. Our people leaders provide feedback to employees, and we believe we need it as a company too, in order to learn and improve. Glassdoor, as well as our annual engagement survey, are important forums for this. It’s critical that we’re always listening to input and we encourage a culture of candid feedback.
What’s Next for 2023
As a Best Place to Work, we’ll continue to focus on the things we do right and learn from feedback about opportunities to improve. I’m excited about what my team is focusing on in 2023, including:
People Leader Effectiveness
We will continue to invest in development and training for our people leaders. No matter your role, your manager has a huge impact on how you experience your job every day. We track the effectiveness of our managers in many ways, including the Manager Effectiveness Index from our annual engagement survey. We use this metric, along with other feedback, to make sure our managers have the knowledge, skills and support they need to be successful and effectively support their teams.
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI)
We leverage networks and tools to attract a diverse and qualified pool of candidates. These efforts have led to an increase in applicants and hires from underrepresented groups, including BIPOC employees and women in leadership. We have seven Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) that provide support and development opportunities for their members and have helped drive positive change within the organization. Our annual engagement survey includes a DEI Index that measures how employees feel about their manager relationships, inclusion and safety to be their authentic selves.
Career Development
Career growth isn’t always a linear path. We’ll continue to help employees navigate and own their career journeys. At Cengage Group, employees can advance in their careers, make lateral moves and increase their skills in many ways. We help employees understand where their strengths are and apply them to current and future roles. In fact, in 2022, over 700 employees (almost 17%) had upward or lateral advancement and roughly a quarter of our open roles were filled by internal candidates, demonstrating our strong commitment to career development.
Looking Forward
Thank you to everyone who provided feedback in 2022 through any channel, including Glassdoor. Our work is never done. I encourage employees to continue sharing feedback in 2023 and we will continue to listen and work hard to strengthen our culture and improve the experience for all employees.
